21 Day Sugar Detox and The Autoimmune Protocol
I decided to add this page within Fresh4Five to document my meals and overall experience with the 21 Day Sugar Detox and Autoimmune Protocol elimination challenge. I don’t want this challenge to take over my whole blog and I still have a number typical recipes lined up to share with you, while I take the time to do this for myself.
I decided to do these 2 challenges this year, because I have had a few old symptoms creep back into my life; like my old friend eczema. I want to eliminate sugar to see if that has an impact. I also want to eliminate seeds and eggs for at least 30 days before I reintroduce them. I have been eating grain-free more and more lately, and have felt the benefits. However, this has also increased my seed and egg intake with all of the baking I do. I have done elimination challenges before and these things were fine for me, but possibly in smaller less frequent doses. We shall see!
I am going to be experimenting and fumbling my way through my meals. Concocting who knows what really?! I am going to post once a day, my previous days meals. If anything becomes consistent and good enough to call a *recipe,* I will be sure to post it on the main page, with full instructions. If you have any questions about my daily meal post, please don’t hesitate to comment, I would love the support!
Thank you for joining me! I hope I can inspire you while you take part in either of these challenges yourself, or inspire anyone who is sitting on the fence.

Final Thought on my Experience
The first time I did a Whole30, I tried to also do the AIP to see if it would make my hair stop falling out (I had an outbreak of Alopecia Areata, an AI condition). I couldn’t do it! I managed a few days without eggs and nuts, but I just *couldn’t* cut the nightshades. I applaud you for tackling the AIP with the 21DSD. No easy feat, and I really hope you get the answers/results you need!
Thank you Jaclyn!
Wow! I am really interested to see how it turns out for you. I’ve been in love with Practical Paleo and going to do 21DSD next month. I haven’t been able to commit to the AI Paleo protocol either but I really, really should. I’m really flaring up lately.
It goes really deep for me…binge eating disorder and unhealthy food relationship. I’m light years from where I was but still I wish I was more in control.
My blog hasn’t officially launched yet but I’m getting close. I will keep checking back to yours! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Jen! I hope it goes well for you too. The AIP can be challenging, but one really motivating thing about doing an elimination challenge is that if you eat 1 thing you shouldn’t….your results could be screwed…It has really kept me focused. Also losing 9lbs in 1 week is super motivating!
I just pinned every one of these recipes. I gave hashimotos and my levels are off the charts. I’m also very underweight so I need to eat eat eat but aip is difficult because I need creative recipes and I’m a terrible baker/cook. I struggle with feeding myself well. I’m hoping pinning a lot of recipes from pinterest will help me put a menu together so I can succeed :)! Thanks for posting all these! If you have any other suggestions for meal planning I’m all ears!
I just did 12/30 of the Whole 30 challenge. I failed on day 13 an today would have been Day 16. Tomorrow will be Day 1, again. I have been keeping track on my blog of what I was eating too but I have to ask, as this time I am doing the AIP which is even more restricting, are you pulling ideas for food out of your head?? LOL.
I do not mean this rude.. I am seriously asking!! I was finding myself by day three or 4 sick of meat, unsure what to make, etc. I check Pinterest and google recipes but they are all so complex and I just don’t have time to make restaurant quality dinners! I went Paleo for severe psoriasis and hives but only recently learned of AIP.
Also – I read on one of the posts you were picking some kids up from school … are you making AIPP for your entire family? I ask as I have 4 kids, 11, 7, 3 and 1.5. I found it was a challenge to PLAN Paleo meals for an entire familyand got severely overwhelmed so I went at it solo but if you are making AIP foods for your whole family, I would love to know if actually cooking for an entire family Paleo runs smoother than trying to plan the meals/find family friendly meals.
I also have a S.O who brings home cookies, ice cream, chocolate because I stopped buying it over a year ago, (after baby was born). I want to slap him… and then eat the cookies and ice cream. Yeah, which *may* have happened on Day 13 noted above. Here’s to another try with a S.O who has learned his lesson !! 😛
Hi Amanda! It is a struggle. I really feel best eating AIP. Nightshades really bother me… from time to time to get a fix of something baked, I used sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds ground up in most of my recipes. I also still eat eggs. I have found I do fine with them. My main issue is the nightshade vegetables and seeds and nuts.
It is really helpful though, to do say 30 days strict AIP and then reintroduce foods to get a real understanding of what foods bother you and what you are willing to put up with eating again.
It is a lot of meat. It was a learning curve for me. Irish girl here with her meat and potatoes. Wrapping my mind around other veggies and how to prepare them took time. There are so many veggies you can eat and for me I needed that added fiber for digestion. Also being active helped me with digesting all the meats. Think simple. Chop squash, sw taters, Brussels and just roast them with salt and pepper, serve with your meats. Really take the mindset of Nourishing your body with simple food instead of what you (or at least I) thought meals *should* be.
My kids eat what I eat. I usually add some sprouted rice, or some other carb. It has taken some time for them to adjust, but I was lucky enough to start them early in their lives. My boys have severe food intolerances so 1 of them has never eaten any differently (his issues brought us here to the paleo lifestyle) It took some time for my oldest who has autism. They didn’t bat an eye at cauli-rice or cauli-mash. lol not sure they notice it isn’t potatoes
I just don’t make 2 different meals.
Having support from you SO is important. It can be hard solo. Just keep thinking 30 days…next thing you know it will be over and you wont even want the cookies you will feel so good! follow some paleo folks on instagram. People (myself included) share photos of day to day meals, you will get inspired!
