Perfect Chocolate Birthday Cake
Every kid deserves a birthday party. It’s a time to shine the spotlight them, and them alone. In families with multiple kids, this is even more true! When we started making things allergy free in this house, I had this attitude: all for one, and one for all. I was certainly NOT going to be making separate things for the whole family…gee whiz…making fresh wholesome food daily is hard enough! My job was to make this work for everyone with as few grumbles as possible. My kids still have no clue that Mommy is feeding them wholesome foods that are nourishing for their bodies, and they don’t have to: I know it!
When birthdays come around in our house, the big deal is the cake. No one seems to care what it tastes like (except me), the kids want the colors and the frosting (translation – SUGAR!)! So that is what I give them. It is not my personal style to do giant party productions. While I certainly appreciate all the efforts so many mom’s go to, I prefer to keep things more simple, especially the younger my kids are.

One year, we just celebrated w/ the neighbors! |
Here is what we do in our household:
- a cake of my kids choosing (we pick from Easy Cut Up Cakes, refer to vanilla cake post)
- a small party or a few best friends over for a play date
- the day’s menu planned by my birthday kiddo
- some balloons, a special birthday sign hung up in the house
If you are setting out to host a party that is allergy friendly..remember that no one has to know it is allergy safe!! Just make some delicious food, throw up a few decorations, maybe plan an activity or two. Kids are simple beings and are easily pleased. If your attitude is that nothings different, theirs will match. The important part is to arm yourself with a handful of kid-friendly recipes. Here are some to get you started (there are LOADS more on my site too!):
Cakes:
Lemon Poppyseed Cake (could be made vanilla)
Vanilla Cake and Easy Cut-Out Cakes
Kid-Friendly Treats & Party Snacks
Perfect for your Fruit Tray: Chocolate Hazelnut Spread
My daughter asks for these ALL the time: Chocolate Chip Cookie Pops
